The Brothers Behind the Still

Devil’s Due Distillery was born from the vision of two brothers — Wylie McDade and Brian Halbert — whose paths in life were very different, but whose shared roots and passion for community brought them back together.

Wylie, raised in Virginia, served proudly in the U.S. Navy for 25 years, traveling the world before returning home with a deep appreciation for tradition, hard work, and good spirits. His brother Brian, also Virginia-raised, built a successful career in computer programming, where he honed the technical precision and problem-solving skills he now brings to the distillery.

In 2021, both brothers retired from their respective careers and turned their dream into reality, opening Devil’s Due Distillery in Kearneysville, WV. Wylie leads with the discipline and storytelling spirit of a veteran, while Brian lends his sharp technical background and laid-back humor — a perfect balance for a venture built on both craftsmanship and camaraderie.

Family is at the core of everything they do. Wylie and his wife are raising three boys, while Brian is the proud father of two sons. When they’re not immersed in distilling, you might find Wylie kayaking or Brian sneaking in some fishing or a round of golf.

Together, the brothers have built more than a distillery. Devil’s Due is a family legacy, a gathering place for neighbors and visitors, and a true celebration of Appalachian spirit and community.
